Recently, she has become more and more independent. In the mornings she generally plays by herself (albeit updating me every few minutes by saying "Dada, ouffhflaladadada" and showing me what she is playing with), and she is rather happy doing so.
She has also started to tell us what do do.
- She tells us to go to sleep by putting her index finger (vertically) over her mouth and blowing air out of her nose (not sure what that's about but it really does sound like sshhhh). She knows how to wake us up - give a kiss or touch the person's nose.
- She tells us she is ready for a kiss by puckering her lips and leaning forward. If we're both around it becomes a game of kiss mom, kiss dad, kiss mom ... mom and dad kiss each other (which she orchestrates by pushing our heads together).
- If, however, we're ready for a kiss from her it can become a game of "Okay. Just kidding." She will pucker then turn her head and start laughing. That is usually followed by us acting surprised and eventually kissing her until she is nearly out of breath laughing.
- She tells us bye-bye. Her new game with Ashley at bedtime is to wave bye-bye to Ashley while she's still on the big bed. Ashley says bye-bye and walks to the other end of the dresser and hides. Then pops back out to catch Eden "sleeping" on the big bed. Eden thinks it's hilarious. Her new game with me is to tell me bye-bye when she's playing in our closet, close the door on one end of the closet, and then pop out the other end to say hello.
- She tells us to get up. In the past few days she has started pulling Ashley or me up from where we are sitting or lying. The other day Eden and Ashley were sitting in the recliner reading. All of a sudden, Eden starting pushing on Ashley's back and grunting. Ashley asked if she wanted to sit by herself. She nodded her head yes (which is also new). Ashley got up, gave her a book, and had time to grab the camera to take this -
The other day after her nap, Eden and I were lounging on the double bed in her room. I was lying on my back, and she had her head resting on my chest. Then, she picked her head up, looked at me, and starting trying to pull me up by my shoulder. I sat up and moved out of the way. She proceeded to put her head on (what used to be) my pillow, looked at me and smiled through her paci.
In the past month, Eden has also become more animated.
- When she gets excited she generally screams and moves her hands and arms in the air. If she sees something in the distance, it's off to the races.
- She has started to rapidly learn new signs. The newest one is hurt (two index fingers together).
- She has also been making up new signs. We taught her "strong" a few months ago. She now uses that when she can't get something open and wants you to help.
- She knows several new animal sounds - and loves to roar like a lion, eeek like a monkey, hop like a bunny, slither like a lizzard, trumpet like an elephant
- Her vocals are also more animated. In addition to mama and dada, she is now saying (more or less frequently) more, hi, bye-bye, and milk.
- She nods her head yes when you ask her a question. "Do you want Daddy to kiss your foot?" "Did you hurt yourself? Want mama to kiss it and make it feel better?"
- She knows lots of body parts and can distinguish between hers and ours. So when I ask "Where's Daddy's nose?" "Where's Eden's nose?" Where's Betsy's nose?" in the bath, she points to all the different noses.
As we recently posted, Eden loves keys. She now knows the difference between real keys and her keys (a key ring with different sized metal washers and nuts) and knows which key goes where. In addition to putting the house key in the front door, she also likes to help start the car {and turn on the windshield wipers and the radio and the blinkers ...}. Just today, she was introduced to the keyed locks on our interior house doors which should be nice given it has been 100 degrees outside most days recently.
And, she definitely knows what she wants. The other day we were in Whole Foods. I was strolling through by the frozen foods, and they had a display with baked green beans (sort of like green bean puffs, which she loves). She saw them, pointed, and started grunting, looking at me, and furiously pointing at them. I grabbed a bag and asked if that is what she wanted. She nodded her head yes. By the time we had checked out, over half the bag was gone.
Of course, some things are still the same. She still loves windows ...
... and she is still the center of our world. What will the 18th month bring? We're looking forward to finding out.
